What is an IPL Photofacial?

IPL Photofacial is a new generation technology for non-ablative skin rejuvenation. It stimulates the production of rejuvenating proteins, resulting in smoothing fine lines and renewing aging skin. IPL treatments can also be used elsewhere on the body to treat spider veins and broken capillaries.

What is IPL treatment good for?

IPL Photofacial treatments have shown to be an effective way to treat sun damage, brown spots, age spots, freckles, and irregular pigmentation (skin discoloration). The intense light pulses are also used to treat rosacea and spider veins/broken blood vessels.

How does IPL Photofacial work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a broad spectrum light therapy that targets pigment producing skin cells by sending multiple wavelengths to the deeper layers of the skin. The body converts the light to heat, which destroys the skin cells that cause irregular pigmentation. As these cell clusters get broken up and dispersed, they are drawn up to the skin’s surface.

While laser treatments send out a single wavelength of light, IPL Photofacial treatments send out several wavelengths of intense pulsed light, so they can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions simultaneously.

What is the IPL treatment procedure?

In an IPL Photofacial, the practitioner uses a device with a hand piece and flash lamp containing an array of highly accurate, filtered light emitters.

When the skin is properly prepped, a cool gel is applied to the face.

The light emitters then pulse over an array of wavelengths that target specific concerns such as age spots, sun damage, skin discoloration, skin blemishes, and acne scars.

While the IPL Photofacial treatment is not necessarily painful, patients may experience some discomfort for a short portion of the session.

IP treatments typically last around 30 minutes, depending on the size and severity of the treatment areas, and for best results it’s recommended to do a 3-6 IPL treatment series scheduled 4 weeks apart.

What can I expect after my IPL Photofacial?

No downtime is required after an IPL Photofacial; patients can get back to their normal activities immediately after their IPL treatments.

Shortly after the session, there may be some redness skin to sunburn, but it should clear up within a few hours. Some patients may also experience mild symptoms such as bruising, darkened age spots, and prolonged redness.

As the hyper melanated skin cells are pulled to the surface, they will increase pigmentation and flake off.

Patients should keep from hot water for 48 hours after their IPL Photofacial. They should also refrain from picking at crusting or blisters, or exfoliating skin. avoid sun exposure for at least a week after treatment and do not use any skincare products that contain harsh chemicals.

How long do IPL Photofacial treatment results last?

Treatments are cumulative, so results will continue to improve after each session.

Skin rejuvenation effects from IPL treatments, such as smoother skin texture and more even skin tone, erasure of brown spots, and reduction of fine lines, are most noticeable 3-6 months after you’ve completed your treatment series.

Who is a good candidate for IPL Photofacial?

Intense Pulsed Light therapy is best for lighter skin tones or light brown skin looking to treat sun damage, fine lines, brown spots, and other discoloration, as well as broken veins.
