What is Co2 Laser skin resurfacing?

Carbon dioxide laser treatment, better known as Co2 laser skin resurfacing, is a treatment that uses a beam of concentrated light to remove the top layers of the skin. It’s used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, acne scars, and uneven skin tone.

How does the Co2 Laser skin resurfacing treatment work?

The Co2 laser treatment uses an ablative laser that sends powerful pulses of light to a targeted area of the face to pass the outer layer of skin and heat the cells in deeper layers. This laser energy damages the cells and jogs the body’s natural wound healing process, which stimulates new collagen formation.

As a result, at the completion of the healing process, the treated skin appears clearer, smoother, and tighter as the surrounding tissue regenerates.

CO2 laser resurfacing can be used on a wide range of skin conditions, with laser energy treatments ranging from ultra-deep skin rejuvenation to superficial ablation.

What can I expect from the Co2 Laser skin resurfacing procedure?

Before your laser treatment begins, your practitioner will apply topical anesthesia to the targeted areas.

Then the practitioner will use the laser to send strong pulses of light deep under the surface of aging skin, promoting new collagen growth!

Treatments take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete, depending on the size and depth of the treatment area.

How painful is Co2 Laser treatment?

All patients receive local anesthesia for the procedure to help reduce pain, however, the treatment can cause a mild stinging sensation.

How long is recovery from Co2 Laser skin resurfacing?

Even though it’s a non-invasive procedure, recovery from laser surgery typically takes 1-2 weeks.

For best results and faster healing, and to avoid complications, after Co2 laser skin resurfacing, patients should be careful to follow their doctor’s directions for cleaning treated areas and applying recommended ointments to prevent scabbing and scarring.

Patients should avoid direct sun exposure or ultraviolet light for 6 weeks as this can cause additional sun damage.

Although the majority of patients recovering from Co2 laser resurfacing return to work and normal activities within a day or two, some can take up to a week before they feel ready for strenuous activity.

When will I notice Co2 Laser skin resurfacing results?

Many patients notice visible results, including improve skin tone, and skin texture within several days of their Co2 laser resurfacing procedure. As collagen growth increases in the weeks following treatment, results from the laser resurfacing such as reduction in acne scars, and smoothing of wrinkled skin will continue to become more apparent. Results are most visible around 3-6 months.

How long do results from Co2 Laser skin resurfacing last?

Results from Co2 laser skin resurfacing usually last about 1 year before new wrinkles and fine lines begin to form and set in again. Patients should wait at least 6 months before seeking another treatment.

What are the risks and side effects of Co2 Laser skin resurfacing?

There is minimal risk of complications from Co2 laser skin resurfacing.

Immediate side effects from the procedure include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Oozing

Who is a good candidate for Co2 laser skin resurfacing?

Candidacy for Co2 laser resurfacing depends a lot on skin tone–with laser treatments in general and especially laser resurfacing, people with dark skin are at risk for hyperpigmentation. With that said, this risk applies to every skin type seeking laser treatment.

Who should avoid Co2 Laser skin resurfacing?

Because skin resurfacing laser treatments rely on a contrast between skin tone and the skin concern, they are not ideal for people with very dark skin. Additionally, Co2 laser skin resurfacing is not recommended for people with serious acne, deep wrinkles, or excessive/sagging skin.
