Building a skincare routine is an investment in your skin’s health and appearance.
But with so many products out there, it can be overwhelming. So overwhelming that you just avoid it altogether!
Our skincare experts are here to help!
This blog breaks down the basic steps for a skincare routine. We will help you understand your skin type and so that you can find the right products to fit your unique needs.
Why Skincare Matters
Your skin is your largest organ in your body, and it does a lot more than just cover and protect.
It shields you from air pollution, helps regulate temperature, and defends against bacteria. A consistent skincare routine supports your skin in performing these roles.
A good routine also reduces risks like premature aging, sun damage, and signs of skin cancer. With a daily routine, your skin stays resilient, youthful, and healthy.
Know Your Skin Type
Knowing your skin type is the first step in creating a successful skincare routine.
It will guide your choice of products, ensuring you avoid irritation and target specific skin concerns effectively.
- Dry skin: Tends to feel tight or rough, and often flakes. This type benefits from products that lock in moisture.
- Oily skin: Appears shiny, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). It needs products that help control oil production without clogging pores.
- Combination skin: Typically oily in the T-zone, with drier areas on the cheeks.
- Sensitive skin: Prone to redness, irritation, or reactions. A gentle approach with fewer active ingredients works best for this type.
- Normal skin: Generally balanced, without extreme dryness or oiliness.
Essential Steps for a Skincare Routine
A good skincare routine involves more than just products! Here are 6 steps in a good skincare routine.
1. Cleanse
Cleansing removes dead skin cells, dirt, and oil that builds up on your skin daily. Never go to bed with a dirty face! Make time for a little self-care each night🧖
Choose a cleanser that matches your skin type. If you have dry skin, we recommend the Cleansing Gel from SkinBetter Science. For normal to oily skin types, try the Refining Foam Cleanser.
For acne-prone skin, choose a cleanser with salicylic acid to clear pores. People with sensitive skin may benefit from mild, fragrance-free options.
2. Tone
Toners balance your skin’s pH and prepare it for the next steps. They also remove traces of makeup or cleanser that might have been missed.
- Depending on the consistency, toner can be applied using a cotton pad or your hands. Gently pat the toner into the skin and wait for it to dry before applying serums.
- Opt for a toner with hyaluronic acid to add moisture or one with antioxidants for additional protection.
3. Exfoliate (2-3 Times a Week)
Exfoliating unclogs pores, brightens skin, and removes dead skin cells.
- Physical exfoliants: These scrubs include tiny grains that manually remove dead skin cells. Use sparingly to avoid irritation.
- Chemical exfoliants: Acids like salicylic acid or lactic acid dissolve dead cells without the friction of a scrub. This option is often gentler and can be used on sensitive skin.
4. Apply Serum
Serums deliver active ingredients directly to the skin, to target specific issues like dark spots, fine lines, or dullness.
- Vitamin C serum: Brightens and protects against environmental damage.
- Hyaluronic acid: Adds hydration and improves skin texture, great for dry skin.
5. Moisturize
Moisturizers lock in hydration and keep the skin barrier intact.
- Gel-based moisturizer: Works well for oily skin, providing moisture without heaviness.
- Cream-based moisturizer: Ideal for dry skin, delivering a richer layer of hydration.
6. Protect with SPF
SPF prevents damage from UV rays, which cause signs of aging, dark spots, and increase skin cancer risks.
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher: Protects against both UVA and UVB rays, helping prevent sun damage.
- Reapplication: Apply every two hours if you are outdoors for extended periods.
Common Skin Care Myths Debunked
Misconceptions about skin care abound. Let’s clear up a few!
Myth 1: Oily skin does not need moisturizer.
Truth: Oily skin still needs hydration to stay balanced and prevent the overproduction of sebum. In fact, if you don’t moisturize oily skin, oil production will increase!
Myth 2: Sunscreen is only necessary on sunny days.
Truth: UV rays penetrate clouds, so daily sunscreen application protects you every day.
Myth3: Exfoliating daily ensures smoother skin.
Truth: Over-exfoliation damages the skin barrier, particularly for sensitive skin. It can cause break outs and can even damage your skin if you are exfoliating too much. Check out our blog post, How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Face, for more information about exfoliation.
